Free Volunteering From Red Tape

Volunteer Centre Wiltshire supports Volunteering England’s campaign to cut through the red tape around volunteering.

We believe that nothing should be easier than giving your time to help other people.

However, there are a number of things that often stand in the way of someone volunteering. Some of them real barriers; others are myths and misunderstandings; some are good old fashioned bureaucracy.

The aim of this campaign is to cut through some of this red tape – real and imagined – and let people know how easy it is to help out in their community.

Government Ponders Charging Volunteers for 'Portable' Criminal Records Check

Third Sector magazine reports that the government is considering charging volunteers to use the portable criminal records checking system that is due to come into force in 2013. The alternative one-off check would remain without charge for volunteers (although the bodies processing the checks on behalf of charities usually charge an admin fee).

The government would decide whether to charge volunteers in about six months' time, when the Protection of Freedoms Bill is due to become law.

Help prevent Theresa May from charging volunteers to use the new proposed online criminal records checking system. The new system has been designed to address the common complaint that volunteers and staff must have separate criminal record checks for every new organisation they work with.

In a letter to the Home Office last week, Volunteering England chief executive Justin Davis Smith said: “Although the government has confirmed that initial disclosures will continue to be free for volunteers, I would like an assurance from you that volunteers will not be expected to pay for this new checking and updating service”.

If you would like to read the letter from Volunteering England to Theresa May click here and if you feel strongly about this matter you could write a similar one to your local MP, find out who your local MP is at http://www.theyworkforyou.com.

We would love to hear what responses you received so let us know at volunteering@growwiltshire.org.uk.
